Here's how to make sure it stays that way.
There's a certain irony in custom merch. Brands spend real time and real money selecting the right blank, getting the artwork perfect, choosing the right decoration method, and ensuring the finished product looks exactly right — and then the gear goes out into the world and gets washed incorrectly, stored carelessly, and worn in ways that accelerate deterioration that proper care would have prevented entirely.

But even the best-made garment has a shorter life than it should when it isn't cared for properly.
This guide exists to close that gap. Whether you're an individual who received a piece of K2K gear and wants to keep it looking great, or a brand manager distributing decorated apparel to a team and want to make sure your investment lasts, these are the care principles that make the difference between a garment that looks sharp for years and one that deteriorates faster than it should.
The Fundamentals: What Damages Decorated Apparel
Before getting into method-specific care, it's worth understanding the forces that damage decorated apparel — because most care mistakes trace back to one of four sources:
Heat. Excessive heat is the single most damaging variable for most decoration methods. High dryer temperatures accelerate fabric deterioration, cause embroidery thread to lose its luster, and can compromise the adhesive bond of DTF transfers over time. Heat management is the most important variable in decorated apparel care.
Agitation. The mechanical action of washing — particularly on high-agitation cycles — puts stress on fabric fibers, embroidery stitching, and decoration edges. Aggressive washing cycles that are appropriate for heavy-duty items like towels and work pants are too aggressive for most decorated apparel.
Harsh Chemistry. Bleach, fabric softeners, and certain enzyme-based detergents interact negatively with decoration materials. Bleach is obvious — it damages both fabric and decoration. Fabric softeners are less obvious but equally problematic, particularly for embroidery and performance fabrics, where softener residue can dull thread sheen, coat moisture-wicking fibers, and compromise the hand feel of the blank over time.
Inside-Out Negligence. Turning decorated garments inside out before washing is one of the simplest and most impactful care steps available — it protects the decorated surface from direct abrasion against the drum, against other garments, and against the agitation action of the wash cycle. It takes three seconds and meaningfully extends decoration life.
Caring for Embroidered Apparel
Embroidery is the most durable decoration method in terms of longevity potential — a well-executed embroidered logo on a quality blank can genuinely outlast the garment itself. But embroidery has specific vulnerabilities that care protocols need to account for.
Washing embroidered garments: Turn the garment inside out before washing. This protects the embroidery from direct abrasion and snagging on other items in the load. Use cold or cool water — hot water causes thread to lose its tension over repeated cycles, which can produce a slightly puckered or distorted appearance in the embroidery over time.
Use a gentle or delicate cycle. The reduced agitation of a gentle cycle significantly reduces stress on embroidery stitching — particularly on the underside where the bobbin thread creates a web of connections that can loosen under aggressive mechanical action.
Use a mild detergent without enzymes or brightening agents. Enzyme-based detergents that are marketed for stain removal can interact with the synthetic thread used in performance embroidery. Optical brighteners — the agents that make whites "whiter" in standard detergents — can gradually alter the color of embroidery thread, particularly in light colors.
Drying embroidered garments: Air drying is always preferable for embroidered apparel. Lay flat or hang to dry away from direct sunlight — UV exposure fades both fabric and thread color over time, and direct sunlight drying can cause uneven shrinkage in fabrics that aren't fully preshrunk.
If machine drying is necessary, use the lowest heat setting available and remove the garment while slightly damp rather than running a full high-heat cycle to completion. The combination of heat and extended tumbling is what causes the most damage — a low-heat short cycle causes far less cumulative stress than a high-heat full cycle.
Never iron directly over embroidery. The heat and pressure of direct ironing can flatten the dimensional quality of embroidery — the raised, textured character that makes it visually distinctive. If ironing is necessary, iron inside out on a low heat setting, or place a pressing cloth between the iron and the embroidered area.
Storing embroidered garments: Store embroidered garments folded or hung — either works well. Avoid storing in compressed conditions that put sustained pressure on embroidered areas, which can flatten the texture over time. For long-term storage, a breathable garment bag is preferable to a sealed plastic bag, which can trap moisture and create conditions for mildew.
Caring for DTF Transfer Apparel
DTF transfers — when applied correctly with proper heat, pressure, and adhesive — produce a bond with fabric fibers that is genuinely strong and wash-durable. But the transfer's adhesive interface has specific vulnerabilities that care protocols need to respect.
Washing DTF decorated garments: Turn inside out — this is even more important for DTF than for embroidery, because direct abrasion against the transfer surface is one of the primary causes of edge lifting over time. The interior of the drum, the texture of other garments, and the mechanical action of washing all create abrasion that the transfer's exposed edges are vulnerable to.
Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle. Heat is the primary chemical stress on DTF adhesive over repeated cycles — cold water washing significantly extends transfer life compared to warm or hot washing. Gentle cycle agitation reduces the mechanical stress on transfer edges.
Use a mild detergent. Avoid detergents with heavy enzyme formulations or optical brighteners. Standard mild detergents — the kind appropriate for colors and delicates — work well for DTF decorated apparel without the chemistry that can interact with transfer materials.
Do not use fabric softener on DTF decorated garments. This is important. Fabric softener deposits a coating on fabric fibers that, over time, reduces the adhesive contact between the transfer and the fabric. Repeated softener washing gradually undermines the bond that makes DTF transfers durable — and once that bond begins to fail, edge lifting and eventual peeling follow.
Drying DTF decorated garments: Air drying is strongly recommended for DTF decorated apparel. Heat is the most significant variable in DTF transfer longevity — while the initial heat-press application bonds the transfer with heat, repeated high-heat dryer cycles gradually stress the adhesive interface over time.
If machine drying is necessary, use the lowest heat setting — the "delicate" or "air fluff" setting if available. Remove the garment promptly when dry rather than leaving it in the dryer through a high-heat cool-down cycle.
Never iron directly over a DTF transfer. The heat and pressure of direct ironing can cause transfer distortion or partial re-activation of the adhesive, which can lead to adhesion irregularities. If the garment needs ironing, iron inside out and avoid the decorated area entirely.
Storing DTF decorated garments: Store flat or hung in conditions that don't put sustained pressure or friction on the transfer surface. Folding with the decoration on the outside and stacking heavy items on top is the storage pattern most likely to cause transfer stress — fold with the decoration inside or hang to avoid it.
Caring for Sublimated Apparel
Sublimation is the most wash-durable decoration method in the K2K repertoire — because the dye is chemically fused with the fabric fibers rather than bonded to the surface. There is no adhesive to compromise, no raised surface to abrade, no thread to stress. The decoration is, quite literally, part of the fabric.
This means sublimated apparel is significantly more forgiving in care requirements than embroidered or DTF decorated pieces. But "more forgiving" doesn't mean "anything goes" — the fabric itself still has care requirements that, if ignored, will cause premature deterioration of the garment even if the decoration remains pristine.
Washing sublimated garments: Cold or cool water washing is recommended for sublimated apparel — not because of decoration vulnerability but because the high-polyester fabrics that sublimation requires are susceptible to heat-induced shrinkage and shape distortion. Polyester's dimensional stability is excellent under normal conditions but degrades under repeated hot-water washing.
Inside out washing is still recommended — protecting the decoration surface from unnecessary abrasion is always the right instinct even when the decoration itself is highly durable.
Avoid bleach entirely. While sublimation dye is chemically fused with the fiber, bleach is aggressive enough to interact with the dye chemistry and cause color fading or discoloration in sublimated prints over time. Mild detergent without bleach or brightening agents is the right choice for sublimated apparel.
Drying sublimated garments: Low heat machine drying is acceptable for most sublimated apparel — the dye-fiber bond is stable enough to withstand normal dryer conditions. However, high heat over repeated cycles can cause the polyester fibers themselves to pill and lose their smooth surface character, which affects both feel and the visual quality of the print over time.
Air drying out of direct sunlight is ideal — UV exposure causes sublimation dye to fade over very long periods of outdoor exposure. Indoor air drying or low-heat machine drying preserves the vibrancy of sublimated colors best over the garment's lifetime.
Care for Performance and Antimicrobial Fabrics
Performance fabrics — moisture-wicking polyester, antimicrobial technical fabrics, and athletic blends — have care requirements that diverge from standard cotton apparel in a few specific ways worth calling out.
Never use fabric softener on performance or antimicrobial fabrics. This is the most important performance fabric care rule — more impactful even than temperature and cycle selection. Fabric softener deposits a hydrophobic coating on fabric fibers that directly counteracts the moisture-wicking properties engineered into performance fabrics. A performance shirt that's been softener-washed repeatedly loses its wicking ability progressively — it feels softer but performs worse with every wash.
For antimicrobial fabrics, fabric softener similarly coats the antimicrobial agents bound to the fiber surface, reducing their effectiveness over time. Protecting antimicrobial performance means washing without softener, always.
Wash performance fabrics with like items. Washing performance athletic fabrics with heavy cotton items — jeans, towels, heavy sweatshirts — subjects the lighter performance fabric to friction and abrasion from heavier items throughout the wash cycle. Washing performance pieces together or with other lightweight items reduces this abrasion and extends fabric life.
Air dry performance fabrics when possible. While most performance fabrics tolerate low-heat machine drying, air drying preserves the elastic recovery of stretch fabrics and the structural integrity of technical weaves better than any dryer cycle. For decorated performance apparel — sublimated athletic gear, DTF on performance tees — air drying is the optimal choice for both fabric and decoration longevity.
Handling Specific Care Challenges
Removing stains from decorated apparel: Treat stains promptly — the longer a stain sets, the more aggressive the removal process required, and aggressive stain removal is more likely to interact with decoration materials. For most food and beverage stains, cold water and mild detergent applied promptly before washing is sufficient.
Avoid spot-treating directly on or immediately adjacent to embroidery or DTF transfers with harsh stain removers — the chemistry in many commercial stain treatments is aggressive enough to damage decoration materials. If stain treatment is necessary near decoration, use the mildest effective option and rinse thoroughly before washing.
Dealing with pilling: Pilling on fabric — the small fiber balls that form on the surface of knit fabrics with wear — is a fabric issue rather than a decoration issue, but it affects the overall appearance of decorated apparel significantly. Pilling is caused by loose fibers working free from the knit structure through abrasion.
The best prevention is selecting quality blanks that use longer-staple fibers and tighter knit constructions — which is why K2K's blank selection process prioritizes fabrics with proven pill resistance. For garments that do develop pilling over time, a fabric shaver removes pills cleanly without damaging the fabric or decoration.
Addressing minor decoration issues: For DTF transfers that develop minor edge lifting — particularly at corners or edges — a home iron on a low-heat setting through a pressing cloth can sometimes re-activate the adhesive and reattach the lifting edge. This is a temporary fix for minor lifting rather than a solution for more significant adhesion failure.
For embroidery with minor thread issues — a loose thread end, a small area of thread that has shifted — a blunt needle can be used to carefully reposition thread without pulling. Never cut embroidery thread to address a loose end — always tuck it carefully to avoid unraveling.
The Care Label Is the Starting Point, Not the Whole Story
Every blank K2K uses includes a manufacturer's care label with washing and drying instructions. These instructions represent the minimum care standards for the fabric — the conditions under which the manufacturer guarantees the blank's performance.
For decorated apparel, K2K's care guidance represents an elevated standard that protects both the fabric and the decoration — which is why our recommendations are sometimes more conservative than the care label alone. A care label that permits warm machine washing is technically correct for the blank in its undecorated state. The same blank with a DTF transfer benefits from cold washing even if the label permits warm — because the decoration's longevity is the additional variable the care label wasn't written to address.
When in doubt: cooler is better than hotter, gentler is better than aggressive, inside out is always right, and fabric softener is never the answer for decorated or performance apparel.
